We’re sure that many are eager to return to their normal lives once this pandemic is over, but there’s really no returning to normal until we can be sure that we are protected against the virus. This is why companies are racing to develop vaccines, and a 90-year old British woman has actually received the world’s first dose of a post-trial vaccine.

The vaccine in question is the one produced by Pfizer that was previously found to be 90% effective during trials. The vaccine has also been approved for use in the UK, where it seems that people can now get themselves vaccinated against the virus. The UK is expected to start a mass vaccination program, where it will be available in over 70 hubs around the country, with patients aged 80 or over being given priority.

This is because the coronavirus is found to have a more adverse effect on those whose immune systems are compromised or weaker, like the elderly. According to the patient, Margaret Keenan, “I feel so privileged to be the first person vaccinated against Covid-19, it’s the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the new year after being on my own for most of the year.”

As for the rest of the world, we suppose we’ll just have to wait and see what the plans are. Given that there are different vaccinations in the works, different governments might have deals with other producers for their vaccines.
