WhatsApp has to be one of the biggest messaging platforms available right now, and it certainly shows. According to an announcement by Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent company, they have revealed that for New Year’s Eve in 2020, over 1 billion voice and video calls were made through the app.

To be more specific, the company claims that over 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made on the day itself, making it the most ever calls made in a single day since WhatsApp was launched. They also claim that this is a 50% increase compared to the same day in 2019, which we suppose is not too surprising.

Given the pandemic and with governments advising people to try and hold back on large gatherings, it’s not surprising that many people are turning to virtual methods of “meeting” each other, and WhatsApp seems to be benefiting from this. Right now, the app only supports voice and video calls made through the mobile version of WhatsApp.

However, we have seen some evidence in the beta version of WhatsApp that suggests that voice and video calls could be coming to the desktop version in the near future, although when exactly is anyone’s guess, but it could be a welcome feature for those who primarily communicate through the app.
