According to an Apple support document, it seems that a small number of MacBook Pros from that period in time are having some issues that prevents them from charging past 1%.Given how old these laptops are, it is clear that they are no longer under warranty, but Apple is offering free battery replacements so that’s a good thing. “A very small number of customers with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers have experienced an issue with the battery not charging past 1%. The battery health status on these devices will also indicate ‘Service Recommended.’ If the status indicates that your battery is Normal, your battery is not affected by this issue.”
Apple notes, “If your 2016 or 2017 MacBook Pro exhibits these behaviors, contact Apple to get your battery replaced, free of charge. Your computer will be examined prior to service to verify that it is eligible for the free battery replacement.” It is unclear how many units might have been affected as a result, but if you’re one of them, you should definitely get it looked at.
A free replacement battery will also help extend the life of your laptop as it means that all the cycles it lost over the years will be replaced, so if you’re looking to avoid having to buy a brand new laptop, a battery replacement might not be a bad idea.
