Apple’s M1 chipset was used in some of last year’s Mac computers. We expect that the company will most likely introduce a new version this year, kind of like how they’ve been doing with the iPhone and iPad’s A-series chipsets, but what could the new model be? What kind of specs are we talking about?
According to a listing on CPU Monkey, a benchmarking website, it seems that the new chipset in question could be known as the M1X, similar to how Apple uses the “X” variants of the A-series for the iPads. However, it should be noted that the benchmarks are apparently a “pre-sample”, which suggests that maybe they are more of a prediction rather than the actual specs itself, or maybe it could be the real deal, but either way it’s probably best to approach with caution.
Assuming the listing is accurate, the M1X could come with 12 CPU cores and its GPU could also come with 16 cores. For a bit of context, the M1 has 8 cores for CPU and 8 cores for its GPU, so the significant change here would be in the GPU department where the M1X could sport double the GPU processing power than its predecessor.
This could result in considerably more powerful Mac computers, which we suppose is to be expected. The first wave of M-series Mac computers covered Apple’s more entry-level Macs, like the MacBook Air, the Mac mini, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro, all of which aren’t necessarily known for offering the most powerful performance.
However, these changes would make sense if Apple is looking to introduce an M-series powered 15-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac. Like we said, these specs aren’t guaranteed so don’t get your hopes up just yet.
