Right now, Microsoft sells its Office productivity suites in two ways: a one-time purchase or a subscription to Microsoft 365. The subscription would be cheaper for the short-term, but in the long-run, it could be more expensive. However, the idea is that the subscription will ensure users will always have access to the latest features.

For those who aren’t particularly keen on subscribing, then you might be interested to learn that Microsoft has recently announced their plans for Office 2021, an upgrade over Office 2019. This will be a one-time purchase where according to Microsoft, it will be supported for the next five years.

The company also stated that the price will remain the same. “We also plan to release Office 2021 for personal and small business use later this year. Office 2021 will also be supported for five years with the traditional “one-time purchase” model. We do not plan to change the price for these products at the time of the release. We will announce more details about new features included in Office 2021 closer to general availability.”

For those who don’t really need that much out of Office beyond its basic functions, this could be a cheaper option, even though it could cost more upfront. There is currently no date on when it will be launched, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for it.
