A few years ago, it was reported that Square Enix was looking to reboot Final Fantasy XI for mobile. Given how popular the Final Fantasy franchise is, there is no doubt that many gamers were excited at the prospect of being able to play the game on their mobile phones. Unfortunately, that dream has come to an end.

According to a report from GameSpot, it seems that the reboot has been cancelled. This was originally spotted by Gematsu and later confirmed by Japanese media outlet Gamebiz.jp. According to Square Enix, who was developing the game alongside Nexon, it appears that the game simply did not live up to their quality standards and the standards expected by fans, which is why they made the decision to cancel it.

What’s interesting is that there have been rumors about the game’s cancellation for a while now, dating back to 2020. Given that their plans were announced in 2016, not much has been said about it since, which is odd as most developers would usually provide some kind of update on the progress, so the lack of updates was concerning.

Now it looks like we know why the developers have largely been silent about it. It is a bummer that gamers won’t be able to play the game on the phones, but there are plenty of other Final Fantasy games that are worth checking out anyway.
