Video conferencing software isn’t new, although with the pandemic in 2020, it certainly was used a lot more. This led to various developers stepping up in terms of features offered by their software, and recently, Google has announced some changes and new features that they are bringing to Google Meet, such as background replacement videos.

Some software already allows users to change the background of their videos. However, this is usually static in terms of design where it’s just an image that does not move, but Google thinks that a moving background could be more interesting.

According to Google, “In the coming weeks, we’re adding the ability to replace your background with a video. Video background replacement can help you maintain privacy for what’s behind you while also making your video calls more fun. There will initially be three options to choose from: a classroom, a party, and a forest, with more on the way soon.”

While it sounds like an interesting idea, we have to wonder if moving backgrounds could end up being distracting to other participants in a meeting. Maybe on one-on-one calls it could be fine, but imagine having a large meeting with everyone using moving backgrounds – it could end up rather chaotic, but we suppose we’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out.
