Sometimes a product can be made and seemingly pass QC tests, but still have issues that might not have been spotted. Such is the case with Verizon’s hotspot devices in which the carrier has announced that they are recalling 2.5 million units due to potential fire and burn hazards.
According to Verizon’s announcement, the affected devices include the Ellipsis Jetpack Mobile Hotspots that have the model numbers MHS900L, MHS900LS, and MHS900LPP. The carrier claims that these devices are at risk due to a faulty lithium ion battery. For those who are affected by the recall, the company will be providing these customers with a replacement Orbic Speed for free.
In the meantime, Verizon has also pushed out a couple of OTA updates for these devices. The update won’t fix the problem, but rather it will show the device’s identifying number on the screen to make it easier for customers to exchange, plus it also prevents the device from charging when it is plugged in to prevent it from potentially overheating. This means that eventually it will run out of juice and customers will be forced to take it back to get it exchanged.
