Apple recently teased that they were about to change music forever. It was speculated that this had to do with the rumors of Apple potentially launching a new lossless streaming option, and sure enough it looks like the rumors were true because Apple has since officially announced not only lossless audio, but also support for spatial audio for Apple Music.For its lossless audio streaming, Apple will offer either Lossless or Hi-Resolution Lossless. According to Apple, “Apple Music’s Lossless tier starts at CD quality, which is 16 bit at 44.1 kHz (kilohertz), and goes up to 24 bit at 48 kHz and is playable natively on Apple devices. For the true audiophile, Apple Music also offers Hi-Resolution Lossless all the way up to 24 bit at 192 kHz.”
It should be noted that in order to truly appreciate the difference in audio quality, you will need to have higher-end audio equipment. This means that the $30 pair of headphones you got from the store won’t cut it. Apple actually notes that for Hi-Resolution Lossless, users will need an external USB DAC in order to truly hear the difference.
This isn’t really surprising since lossless audio formats tend to be favored by audiophiles who might already have the necessary hardware. That being said, the good news is that these new streaming options will actually be offered at no additional cost to Apple Music subscribers. It will be launching in June and will cover more than 75 million songs.
