With the release of iOS 14.5, Apple has introduced its App Tracking Transparency feature that basically gives users the option of whether or not they want an app to be able to track them. It doesn’t kill tracking completely, but rather it puts the choice in the hands of users, which is a good thing as far as privacy is concerned.

However, Facebook is hoping that you will let them track you. Initially discovered by researcher Ashkan Soltani, it seems that Facebook and Instagram are now displaying popup messages to users who have installed iOS 14.5 on their devices. In these popups, they are encouraging users to enable app tracking for their apps.

We suppose that’s fair game to at least ask users to give them a chance, but some have taken issue with the choice of words in the popups. Basically, Facebook and Instagram are asking that users enable app tracking to keep their services free of charge, as if to imply that if they do not, there is a chance that they could end up charging you to use their services in the future.

That being said, this is kind of a gray area. Apple had previously stated that they will be banning apps that attempt to reward users who enable app tracking, but like we said, it’s kind of a gray area here since this isn’t really considered as a reward. Either way, we’ll have to wait and see in the long-run exactly how much this will affect Facebook or Instagram.
