When the Tamagotchi toy first launched back in the late 1990s, it was a hit amongst kits and adults around the world, but like most toys, it eventually faded into obscurity. However, over the years, we’ve seen the folks at Bandai try to revive it by launching it in smartphone format or by relaunching the actual toy.

However, it looks like in 2021, Bandai is trying their hand once again at trying to revive the toy’s popularity by announcing its later iteration – the Tamagotchi smartwatch. Simply dubbed “Smart”, this is a Tamagotchi that also doubles as a smartwatch. Given the size and design of the thing, it is clear that this is designed with kids in mind, although no one’s stopping you from buying or using it.

For the most part the concept remains the same where you’ll have to look after the pet like you would a real one, like feeding it, playing with it, cleaning up after it, and so on. However, the main difference is that with the smartwatch version, it comes with both touch and voice controls, although it seems that voice control is very basic as it doesn’t come with speech recognition, so don’t expect it to be similar to digital assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant.

Other features of the Smart include a digital clock and a pedometer and there will also be separate TamaSma cards that will let users sideload characters and items to the device. Right now, Smart will be sold in Japan starting in November where it will be priced at around $60.
