These days, a good many laptops come with laptops built into them. Of course, maybe some of the super low-end models might skip on the webcam to cut down on costs, but come 2023, that will no longer be the case. This is because if you wanted to build and release a laptop in 2023 that runs on Windows 11, a webcam is a must.
This is according to Microsoft’s supporting document in which it states that all Windows 11 PCs, save for desktops, need to have built-in webcams starting in 2023. Microsoft is obviously not dictating what PC manufacturers do, but if you wanted to sell and ship it out as a Windows 11 PC, then there needs to be a webcam. Although given that there aren’t many options to Windows, at least for mainstream users, most PC makers will have to comply.
That being said, it’s not necessarily a bad thing though. Since laptops are used for work and school where sometimes having video calls is necessary, a built-in webcam can be useful. Guaranteeing that there is a webcam in the laptop also means that it is one less thing shoppers need to think about if it’s going to be a new standard.
Other requirements also include HD resolution along with support for auto white balance and auto exposure. This is expected to come into effect in 2023 so PC makers still have time to meet this new requirement if they haven’t done so already.
