Mario is probably one of the world’s most recognizable characters and franchises in the gaming industry. This is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 managed to fetch an eye-watering $1.5 million when it was sold at Heritage Auctions over the weekend.

To be specific, the game managed to fetch $1.56 million, and what’s interesting is that a few days prior to the sale, a sealed copy of the NES version of The Legend of Zelda actually fetched $870,000 which was a lot of money already, but it was soon quickly eclipsed by the sale of Super Mario 64.

The sale of the game makes it the most expensive game to have ever been sold, and possibly the only game to have crossed the $1 million mark. As The Verge noted, over the past 12 months various vintage games have been sold at auction where in April 2021, a copy of Super Mario Bros. actually sold for $660,000.

That being said, we have to wonder if this could still be a thing 10-20 years down the road, especially with a lot of games these days being sold as digital copies. If you’re hoping to land a score like this one day, maybe it’s time to start considering purchasing games in their physical form.
