Last week, Facebook’s services went down. This included apps and services like Facebook itself, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Many were confused by what happened and rightfully so. A few days later, the company’s services were affected again, but this time it was a shorter outage.

However, it seems that in anticipation of potential outages in the future, Instagram has announced that they will be testing out alerting users within the app so that people have a better idea of what’s going on. This is to provide users with a better idea of what’s happening instead of leaving them confused.

According to Instagram, “We’re testing a new feature that will notify you in your Activity Feed when we experience an outage or technical issue, and when it is resolved. We won’t send a notification every single time there is an outage, but when we see that people are confused and looking for answers, we’ll determine if something like this could help make things clearer.”

We’re not sure if this is only for Instagram or if Facebook and WhatsApp will gain similar alerts, but it will be useful in the future instead of leaving users to try and find their own answers. Hopefully there won’t be more outages like the one from last week in the future, but it’s always good to be prepared.
