A couple of years ago, Instagram announced the launch of Threads. This is a standalone messaging app that lets Instagram users chat with each other through Instagram’s direct messaging feature but through a separate app. It’s a good way for users to keep in touch with each other without having to launch the main app.

However, it seems that maybe it wasn’t as popular as Instagram would have liked because it appears that the company will now be shutting down the app. This was confirmed by the company to TechCrunch where Instagram says that the app will be shutting down by the end of the year.

What this means is that if you are using the app, you’ll have to return to Instagram if you want to continue to send or receive messages through it. In a way it’s not particularly disruptive since your messages sync up anyway, it’s just that chatting through Instagram might be a little distracting for some as they might end up spending time scrolling through their feed even if they might not have intended to.

According to a statement provided to TechCrunch, a company spokesperson said, “We know that people care about connecting with their close friends, and we’ve seen this particularly over the past few years with the growth of messaging on Instagram. We’re now focusing our efforts on enhancing how you connect with close friends on Instagram, and deprecating the Threads app.”
