There are a couple of different ways that you can get your hands on cryptocurrency. One of the ways would be to buy or trade it using an exchange, and another way would be to mine for it yourself. However, mining might be difficult because in order to mine efficiently, you’d need a massive setup.
So if you can’t afford to put together a mining operation, what’s the next best way? It turns out hackers had the idea of hijacking already-existing servers. According to reports, this is exactly what a group of hackers have done where they hacked into a datacenter full of HP servers and used those machines to mine for around $110,000 worth of cryptocurrency.
The report claims that the hackers breached HP’s servers and reprogrammed them to mine for Raptoreum cryptocurrency. Keep in mind that the servers used are made by HP, but it wasn’t HP themselves that were hacked or breached. At this point in time, it is unclear who was the company that was affected.
It has also been suggested that the hackers had exploited the Log4J vulnerability to gain access to these servers. This is not the first time we’re hearing about hackers hijacking other devices to mine for crypto. In the past, we have heard of malware targeting devices like personal computers and even mobile devices to mine cryptocurrency secretly without the user’s knowledge.
