According to a report from earlier this year, it was suggested that Apple could actually be ditching the notch in the iPhone 14 for a pill-shaped cutout, bringing us one step closer to seeing an iPhone without a notch and maybe one day ditch it for good.

However, according to Ross Young of DSCC, it seems that this pill shaped cutout might only be exclusive to Apple’s iPhone 14  Pro models, which includes the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. It will only be in 2023 with the iPhone 15 series that Apple will most likely introduce it to the rest of the lineup.

For those who might have been hoping that we could eventually see an under-display camera that would drop the need for a notch or cutout to begin with, Young cites his sources as saying that probably won’t happen in 2023. This is because there needs to be coordination between both the display and sensor teams, as well as finding a supplier who is qualified to mass produce it, presumably to Apple’s standards.

To be fair, while some companies have managed to put out phones that do feature under-display cameras, they haven’t really gone mainstream yet as the quality does leave quite a bit to be desired. This means iPhone hopefuls will probably have to wait until at least 2024 or later for such a device.
