Samsung Electronics has announced that the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature of their Samsung Health Monitor app has received FDA clearance. With this clearance, the app’s existing on-demand Electrocardiogram (ECG) function can now proactively monitor heart rhythms for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) directly from the user’s wrist.

The IHRN feature aims to assist millions of people worldwide who may be unaware of potential heart risks. Samsung prioritizes proactive safety solutions and strives to provide users with a holistic understanding of their cardiovascular and overall health.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of global mortality, and AFib serves as a warning sign for major cardiovascular issues such as stroke and heart failure. Unfortunately, many AFib cases go undetected due to a lack of symptoms.

Galaxy Watch offers various tools to enhance heart health awareness, including the Samsung BioActive Sensor, on-demand ECG recording, and HR Alert function. Now, the IHRN feature adds another layer of health monitoring capability.

Once activated in the Samsung Health Monitor app, the IHRN feature continuously checks for irregular heart rhythms using the BioActive Sensor on Galaxy Watch. If a series of irregular measurements is detected, the user receives a warning about potential AFib activity and is prompted to take an ECG measurement for a more accurate assessment using their watch.

The Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature will debut on upcoming Galaxy Watch devices as part of the newly announced One UI 5 Watch, with plans to expand its availability to previous editions in the future.
