We’re sure that many of us have had that experience when your friends or family members come to your home and ask for the WiFi password. Maybe you use this password for other things and you’d rather not give it outright, or maybe you’re tired of having to repeat it over and over again.

Thankfully, there is a quicker way of giving your guests access to your home’s WiFi and that is by generating a QR code. By creating a QR code, guests to your home can use their smartphones and quickly scan the code and connect to your WiFi, saving you the time and trouble of having to give it out manually.

You can even create a printout and paste it on your wall or fridge so that they can scan it themselves when they want. Does this sound like something you could see yourself using in the future? If it does, then here’s what you need to do to create a QR code for your WiFi.

Creating A QR Code For Your WiFi

  1. Go to qifi.org on your computer
  2. Enter your home’s WiFi details like SSID, encryption type, and password
  3. Click the “Generate!” button to create the QR code
  4. You will also have the option of exporting the QR code or printing it to paste it on your wall

For those who aren’t familiar with their WiFi SSID or encryption type, here’s what you need to know:

SSID – This is basically the name that you’ve chosen for your home’s WiFi network. Simply open your phone’s WiFi settings or computer WiFi settings and you should see the name that your device is connected to. If you setup your router yourself, then the name should already be familiar to you.

Encryption type – There are several different encryption types that are available when setting up your WiFi, depending on your router. For the most part, most routers use the WPA/WPA2 encryption by default. However, if you’re unsure, in Windows 10, open your WiFi settings, click on Properties under the current network you’re connected to, and look for Security Type.

Password – This is the password that you’ve chosen to connect to your WiFi network. Assuming you set it up yourself, you should remember it. If you’ve forgotten or if someone else set it up for you, then check out our guide on how to find your WiFi password.

How To Scan A QR Code

  1. If a guest comes to your home and wants the WiFi, simply show them the QR code
  2. They will need to either open the camera app on their phone or use a QR code scanner
  3. Once the QR code has been successfully scanned, they should now be connected to your WiFi network
