These innovations elevate critical automotive components’ long-term reliability and safety, including steering, braking, and airbags. By combining Aurora Labs’ Line-of-Code Intelligence (LOCI) AI technology with Infineon’s 32-bit TriCore™ AURIX™ TC4x family of microcontrollers (MCUs), the collaboration wants to usher in a new era of predictive maintenance for vehicles.

This partnership aims to empower automotive manufacturers to deliver vehicles with enhanced safety, reliability, and performance throughout their lifespan – thus increasing customer satisfaction and reducing recalls and other issues simultaneously. This could have repercussions on car manufacturers’ bottom lines.

The solution also seeks to provide real-time monitoring and response to software failures at both MCU and ECU (Electronic Control Unit) levels. One of the objectives is to facilitate the development of safer automotive systems strictly adhering to the ASIL-D standards (Automotive Safety Integrity Level D).

“We have partnered with Infineon to ensure an improved driver experience based on predictive safety maintenance using AI capability. Our solution streamlines OEM software development at lines-of-code and hardware peripheral resolution to enable them to develop safer systems in accordance with ASIL-D,” said Zohar Fox, CEO and Co-founder of Aurora Labs.

Here, the AURIX TC4x Parallel Processing Unit (PPU) functions as an AI accelerator and operates independently to ensure it does not use the resources of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) applications running on the CPU. This allows for the parallel execution of AI-based predictive maintenance processes without altering the performance of other vehicle functionalities.

Aurora Labs’ LOCI AI technology enables precise and proactive detection of software failures at the line-of-code level. It can also tell developers which logic block of the SoC was involved. The collaboration ensures real-time monitoring and response to MCU- and ECU-level software failures that meet WP29 requirements.

“With the combination of Infineon’s proven AURIX MCUs, along with Aurora Labs’ software to prevent silent data corruption and software misbehavior in chipsets, our new solution gives car manufacturers and drivers an extended level of safety confidence for critical automotive applications such as steering, braking and airbags.” (Thomas Schneid, Senior Director Software, Partner and Ecosystem Management of Infineon Technologies.)

Infineon Technologies and Aurora Labs’ collaborative initiative could be a leap forward in predictive maintenance for automotive components. It should allow developers and car makers to detect problems early and in real-time, making potential instant remediation possible by resetting specific software or hardware states of an individual vehicle. If there are logs, they can be aggregated and analyzed offline to get a larger picture of a whole fleet.

The implementation of AI technology on Infineon’s AURIX TC4x MCUs might vastly improve safety standards in the automotive industry and could set a new benchmark for the development of safer and more reliable vehicles.

QSIMPLUS is a company that specializes in Quantum Computing technologies. Know for its QSIMpro quantum communications software simulator released last year. The company comes back to CES with another innovation in the form of QSIMpro-LAN, a software that allows operating local area Quantum networks.

Quantum computers and networks are very sensitive to their environment. One primary challenge is quantum decoherence, where quantum states can be easily disrupted, especially if the quantum information traverses various mediums that may trigger decoherence.

In their press release, QSIMPLUS doesn’t dive deep into the technical details, but QSIMpro-LAN extends the reach of a quantum network by introducing mobile nodes that allow ordinary computers to communicate with a quantum network.

The software takes care of the Quantum Key Distribution as your typical computer typically lacks the ability to generate and process quantum keys for secure communications. As far as I know, this is still the topic of intense research, so having a functional way to do this sounds impressive.

To a non-technical person, this looks very much like network address translation (NAT) for quantum networks and the QSIMpro-LAN acts like a quantum router.

Quantum networks have many advantages, including some related to security. For example, it is in theory impossible to eavesdrop such a network since quantum theory stipulates that it is impossible to make a copy quantum state without being detected.

Having more computers and people access a highly secure network can be extremely beneficial for productivity and security. According to QSIMPLUS, “the main customers are organizations that require robust data security (such as defense, banking and data centers)”.

PLCOSKIN is a bio-startup that builds TissueDerm, a medical technology that helps with reconstructing human tissues. This company has already obtained a “medical device class IV” approval from the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA).

TissueDerm is an artificial dermis (artificial skin) that is utilized to provide structural support to the skin after surgeries such as breast cancer removal or mastectomy. When placed under the skin, this artificial skin provides better support for the implants and becomes a scaffold for tissue regeneration.

What sets TissueDerm apart is the material it is made from. PLCOSKIN uses PCL-Collagen, which is approved as safe to be inside the body and is also bio-degradable (“absorbable”). As such, it should be free of toxicity and inflammation while providing high tensile strength and a good environment for tissue regeneration.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester with a wide range of applications. It is a synthetic polymer that belongs to the family of aliphatic polyesters. PCL is known for its flexibility, low melting point, and biocompatibility, making it suitable for various purposes. In the medical industry, PCL is commonly used for bioresorbable sutures and drug delivery systems.

On top of these impressive properties, TissueDerm can also be custom-printed to the exact patient dimensions to ensure a perfect fit for non-flat surfaces that would be very difficult to manage with a planar sheet of artificial skin. This led to TissueDerm variants such as TissueDerm Breast or TissueDerm Orbit (eye).

According to its creators, TissueDerm has three highly desired properties that other artificial skins don’t combine: high mechanical strength, good tissue regeneration, and biodegradability.

There’s even a TissueDerm BCS product, which is designed to fill in the space left by removing a tumor to avoid having a cavity in the body that will be filled with liquid or that will somewhat visibly collapse and lead to long-term changes in the skin’s shape.

As the product biodegrades (= is absorbed by the body), it is replaced with the natural body tissue, leading to a more natural healing and appearance.

Unsurprisingly, this product was created in Korea as it is one of the leading countries for surgeries, particularly plastic surgeries. This is an innovative creation that not only improves the aesthetic of the treated area but also the quality of the skin regeneration.

As it stands, PLCOSKIN is in discussion with Japanese authorities to get approval and is also in the pre-approval phase with the USA FDA, which bodes well for future business prospects. With the number of breast surgeries increasing worldwide, unfortunately, partially due to a rise in breast cancers, it’s encouraging to see better reconstruction solutions.

Hurotics is a company that works on exoskeleton-type applications that are lightweight and adaptable to the user’s morphology. Hurotics stands for Human+Robotics, which is a great name for a company that wants to help humans move beyond their limits “through human-robot collaboration,” according to their website.

In Seoul, South Korea, I had the opportunity to look at the H-Flex product in person. H-Flex is a product presented here at CES 2024. It is a product designed to help with rehabilitation exercises at home.

Hopefully, you’ll never experience it, but many people who might need walking or standing rehabilitation may get some help at the hospital after an initial accident or incident. Although in-clinic rehabilitation is important and resource-intensive, it does not last long for cost and availability reasons.

Once at home, there’s a huge opportunity to pursue some form of rehabilitation, but most people don’t because it’s not convenient or requires a specialist to help, etc.

H-Flex is designed to be light, cost-effective, and easy to use. As such, it does not require a medical specialist to operate, and patients or family members should be able to use it. The principle is simple: there are motor modules that pull artificial muscles strapped to the legs.

The function of that artificial muscle is to provide the extra strength required to perform a movement (or to stay balanced), hopefully, until the person has trained enough to operate on their own.

While this design might not appear as “high-tech” as other exoskeletons, it has the advantage of being very configurable to match the patient’s body perfectly, even if the needs are asymmetric (the left and right sides aren’t the same length or strength). The artificial muscle length is configurable for that reason.

Inside the motor box, a sensor keeps an eye on the tension and triggers the motor when needed, at the exact force required. The algorithm behind this is an AI that runs locally, and not inside a data center. It has been trained with established data, and motion capture data as well.

Hurotics collaborates with the Seoul University Hospital and hopes to do the same with others, such as the University of Illinois Chicago and others. Ultimately, the startup wants to establish an office in Chicago and get FDA approval to sell in the USA market.

Safeware (official site) is a company that specializes in safety solutions which take the form of various airbag vests that can save lives in case of falls or collisions.

Fall accidents are relatively common and can occur in various settings, affecting people of all ages. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), falls are a significant global public health issue, particularly among older adults. Statistics indicate that around 37.3 million falls that are severe enough to require medical attention occur yearly.

Safeware tends to address construction sites or other work-related falls, a portion of that number above. Many dangerous falls in that environment happen below the 10-meter (30-foot) level. That’s because, above that, other measures, such as safety nets, can be taken.

However, working on a floor’s high ceiling can be incredibly dangerous in case of a fall, and it unfortunately happens a lot. While in Korea, I discussed the company’s latest safety vest called “C3,” the most compact and lightweight version to date. With this new model, Safeware has integrated modifications most requested by customers, such as being able to remove the shoulder pads and other ergonomic changes.

The vest has sensors that detect falls. If such an event happens, a huge airbag will deploy to protect the worker’s vital areas. The goal is to have zero fatalities from such incidents.

It is very difficult to build such protection devices because it’s very hard to avoid false positives regarding fall detections. For example, many fall-detection devices for the elderly routinely experience false positives. However, if the airbag was to be triggered when not needed, that could create an accident due to the worker’s reflex response. In that way, Safeware has no room for error, and so far, they seem to be performing well.

Beyond this accomplishment, there are future perspectives and options to make this type of safety evolve. For example, airbag integration could come directly into the work uniforms. It is also possible to imagine floatation devices for maritime environments so people don’t fall and drown.

There’s also a possible consumer perspective too. With the generalization of personal mobility devices (scooters), it’s easy to see how such devices could prevent injuries. Even bicyclists or roller-skaters could use some of this. But more importantly, a hip-fracture safety device for the elderly could be crucial some day. Studies suggest that within the first year after a hip fracture, the mortality rate can range from 12% to 30%, with higher rates observed in older age groups.

With 20,000 units installed and operating worldwide, the technology has proven effective in the real world. So far, at least five lives have been saved, according to Safeware.

There are more business opportunities as the relatively small $950 cost of a vest might bring down insurance costs in the future. Also, as regulators see the benefits of such protections, wearing them might become mandatory, putting this startup in a very advantageous position.

During sleep, the body repairs tissues, consolidate memories, and regulate hormones. Adequate sleep supports immune function, mental well-being, and cardiovascular health. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to various health issues, including an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and impaired cognitive function.

That’s precisely why Ruah Lab (official site), a Korean startup, is on a mission to promote healthy sleep worldwide, and it does that by tackling efficient sleep testing, which is the fundamental building block to improving sleep quality.

The company does that with a combination of sensing and AI analysis. The sensing is done with the help of a small wearable mask that can accurately measure the user’s breathing from which sleep quality data can be derived.

The sensor is called WeRAS (Wearable Respiration Analysis System), and it can be used for sleep tracking and other applications that are based on breathing measurement (“respiratory signals”). There’s also a heat sensor in the system.

WeRAS is more complex than its minimalist exterior design might suggest. Inside, you’ll find an extremely sensitive airflow sensing system and a movement sensor, as motion is also a pertinent data point for sleep analysis.

I have seen sleep analysis systems before, and they were huge, so you have to wonder how they impede the very thing they are supposed to analyze. Clinic-grade systems can’t even be used at home; again, sleeping in a clinic is not conducive to the best sleeping experience either.

On the contrary, WeRAS is small and can be utilized with a simple mobile phone app. People can sleep in their own beds, and the data is saved to the cloud for later analysis. The device has an 8-10 hrs battery life and charges via a USB-C port.

Ruah Lab’s application can gather data and show insights, but if a condition is detected, users should talk to their doctors about that data and let that person recommend remediation strategies, which could involve diet changes, workouts, etc.

The business model consists of selling the devices to hospitals and clinics first, as medical professionals can help improve the product during the initial phase. Prototypes are being tested right now in Korea.

In theory, this solution might enable clinics to perform a sleep test for ~$300, which is about 10X less than legacy systems, according to Ruah Lab

There are more opportunities to improve this solid foundation. The startup is already considering adding more sensors (blood oxygen, sound) and possibly new usage models where breathing is important, such as Yoga or Meditation.

This solution can kickstart discovering and figuring out why people don’t sleep well and setting them on a path of better sleep and overall health.

MetaImmuneTech has two main business activities with the first being the Immune Functional Assays (testing service) and the second is the development of natural-based drugs and foods.

The CELLYTICS_NK immunity diagnosis solution is designed to measure NK (Natural Killer) cell activity in patients quickly and cost-efficiently. Natural Killer (NK) cells are a type of lymphocyte, which is a white blood cell involved in the immune system. NK cells play a crucial role in the body’s defense against viruses and cancer.

In addition to their direct cytotoxic activity, NK cells also regulate other immune responses. They release signalling molecules, such as cytokines, that help coordinate and modulate the immune system’s activity. NK cells are a vital component of the body’s defense mechanisms.

The need for such systems is growing as more and more patients receive cancer therapy based on their immune system (immunotherapy), and the diagnosis provides insights into NK cell activity (or lack of it). Keep in mind that the NK cells “activity level” is not related to their “numbers.”

CELLYTICS_NK is based on a lens-free shadow imaging technology. At the top of the imaging system, an LED light illuminates a sample. Below the sample, a sensor captures the images of the sample that contains cells.

MetaImmuneTech says its solution allows the sample to be processed within two hours, while previous solutions might have taken days instead. When the data is ready, the solution uses machine learning to analyze the captured images and produce an analysis (complete blood count, for example). It’s completely automated, and no experts or technicians are required, which means this could be done at the point of care.

The business model is quite straightforward: MetaImmuneTech wants to demonstrate a clear productivity advantage to entice customers. From there, devices and consumable sales drive the hardware aspect of the business.

At the same time, analytical services, software customizations/upgrades, research partnerships, and intellectual property licensing are the intangible aspects of the company. That’s impressive for a company that was established only in 2021.

Nevertheless, the ultimate benchmark for any medical/health company will be its social impact on medical outcomes, so let’s see what statistics MetaImmuneTech can show us in the near future.

At CES 2024, Lordsystem (official site) introduces Trip.PASS, its digital security and personal privacy platform, is the backbone of the Trip.PASS Mobile Passport service. Trip.PASS (the platform) merges identification with financial and tourism services for global travellers. It allows users to perform a number of transactions only using a mobile app instead of requiring a form of government ID that can be easily lost.

According to Interpol, officials worldwide conducted 1.7 billion searches for lost passports in 2021. Losing a passport can quickly take a fun trip down the drain and we would ideally use our passports only when necessary just to reduce the risk of loss. Places like Duty-Free stores or train stations are prime places where ID papers are lost or forgotten.

Enter Lordsystem’s Trip.PASS Mobile Passport service. It’s a digital passport replacement that allows secure identification and financial transactions to happen at places like Duty-Free stores, Casinos, Airports, Hotels, Public Transport, and more. Merchants are very excited about this because a better user experience may lead to higher sales.

To get onboarded, people must create a mobile passport from a physical one. The application will read the passport information and perform a character recognition pass. Next, it will read the passport chip to verify the passport. Finally, it will match the newly created mobile passport with the user biometric information (local phone fingerprint and face ID). The mobile passport will be archived in a proprietary blockchain.

When using the mobile passport, a QR code is generated and can be scanned by a retail point of sale, just like various mobile payment systems operate. That way, the payment and ID verification happens at the same time. With participating hotels, guests can use an automated check-in point instead of waiting in line for staff. Basically, all places where your ID needs to be verified could potentially benefit from this smoother process.

Lordsystem envisions a world where its technology is widely accepted, making it seamless for travellers to pay without currency exchange (there would still be a 1% fee). Using public transportation would also be a lot more convenient because it’s easier to charge anytime from multiple financial sources. In many Asian countries, charging a transportation card needs to be done with cash only, and that’s a major drawback of the established system.

The e-wallet aspect of the app is interesting from a business standpoint because it offers an opportunity for the company to do some arbitrage or at least get some interest from the deposited cash, in my opinion. However, the sizeable business will come from the fees generated at the sales point and perhaps other SaaS services. The company estimates the market to be worth about $20 Billion right now.

It’s hard to build and operate a global ID system that is recognized and authorized by other countries, so the fact that Lordsystem operates in Japan shows they are on the right track. Apparently, 10 East Asian countries will join soon. If they can spur adoption worldwide, we’re looking at a network that could experience tremendous growth.

Finally, there’s also a physical debit and transportation card that’s available in Korea. I’ll try it next time I’m in South Korea because that would be much more convenient than the T-Money card I’ve used until now.

Transparent OLED displays are not a novelty; they have been around for over a decade, with notable examples such as this LG transparent OLED display spotted in 2009 and another one from Samsung in 2011 (LCD). At that time, we thought they were merely sci-fi movie gimmicks and would never transition into mainstream consumer products.

However, today at CES 2024, LG challenged our perception with its latest innovation, the Signature OLED T, touted as the “world’s first wireless transparent TV.”

The Signature OLED T redefines home theater integration, seamlessly blending a TV panel into a stylish shelf case. When the TV is turned off, the black background behind the translucent OLED panel rolls down, transforming into a regular piece of furniture. When turned on, users can opt for the transparent viewing mode since the panel’s image quality is fantastic even when seen through.

The TV comes with all the bells and whistles, including a large 77-inch $K OLED display and the LG Zero Connect Box that sends 4K images and sound to the TV wirelessly for a cable-free experience. As the latest addition to the Signature collection, the OLED T incorporates the flagship α (Alpha) 11 AI processor, delivering four times the AI performance of its predecessor. LG claims a 70 percent increase in graphic performance and a 30 percent faster processing speed.

The modular design of the LG OLED T accommodates various installation methods, offering stand-alone, against-the-wall, or wall-mount options.
Onoma (official site) is an AI company presenting its first AI-powered service called TooToon at CES 2024. TooToon is a webtoon creation tool, and if you don’t know what webtoons are, they are a form of digital comics or graphic novels that are specifically created for online platforms or mobile apps. The term “webtoon” is a portmanteau of “web” and “cartoon.” What distinguishes webtoons from traditional comics is their unique format, often presented in a vertical scrolling style.

Just like producing comics or manga, creating a webtoon is incredibly time-consuming and it looks like most of that time is spent in storyboarding as the creators work on the visual structure of the story. It might be counter-intuitive if you know nothing about this, but once the storyboarding (rough drawings) is done, adding the final details does not take that long.

As such, TooToon focuses on accelerating that aspect of the work, thanks to generative AI. This starts with the high-level idea generation, synopsis, and storyboard done by the AI, based on user inputs, whether text prompts or images. For example, the creator could draw stick figures or 3d mannequin figures and upload these as 2D images. From there, the AI takes over and does the heavy lifting.

The Tontoon service lets creators upload multiple views of their characters as a reference for the AI, which can later re-create them under any angle and position. Apparently, as few as 30 images would be enough to create a reference character.

As you can imagine, using generative AI in this context could deliver an incredible boost in productivity for current webtoon creators. But this could open the door to even more people into the webtoon universe. Why? Because you could conceptually have great story ideas but little drawing talent. Hire someone to create the character references, or use Onoma AI’s asset store, once and use the AI to generate future drawings.

Sure, it’s not that easy to produce a commercial-grade webtoon, but this could attract many people and spark new passions.

From a business standpoint, Onoma AI deploys TonToon as a SaaS, so we’re talking about a recurring income source. Just like TV Shows, webtoon creators need to churn new episodes and once they have started, it’s easy to imagine they’ll stay invested to preserve the workflow and style of their work.

Onoma AI has not revealed pricing yet. Now, they are working closely with top webtoon creators to determine the final public pricing. Just as a reference, the company estimates that its tool saved as much as 30% to 40% of work during one of the test projects.

From the demo that I’ve seen, the workflow made a lot of sense. I used to draw Mangas and I could see how TonToon could save an enormous amount of time. And I have a sense this is just the beginning. Generative AI offers a lot more opportunities not only for storyboarding but also for final rendering, allowing different styles. I can’t wait to see webtoons created with this tool.
