Canon unveils EOS M interchangeable lens digital cameraEarlier today we reported that Canon would be jumping aboard the mirrorless bandwagon, and true enough they did with the announcement of the Canon EOS M. Pictured above is none other than Canon’s effort at a mirrorless camera which packs DSLR-like quality images and interchangeable lens into a compact body. While Canon might be late to the party (their competitors Sony and Nikon have already launched mirrorless systems), hopefully the specs and performance of the EOS M will do their delay justice.

Featuring an 18MP image sensor, the EOS M packs an APS-C sensor in favor of the Micro Four Thirds system, along with a 3” rear display which is touch capable and allows the user to perform multi-touch gestures on it, such as pinching-in, swiping, tapping, etc. Granted there are photographers who might prefer physical buttons, but we guess in a world where touchscreens are starting to dominate, touchscreen displays on digital cameras are starting to become a more regular occurrence. The good news is that while the EOS M uses a different lens mount compared to that of the EOS DSLR cameras, the camera comes bundled with a mount adapter (for the body-only kit) that allows you to use existing EF and EF-S lenses with the camera.

Other features of the camera includes Full HD video capture and is expected to be available in black, glossy white, stylish silver or bold red colors. The camera will also sport a hot shoe where photographers will be able to mount flash units, such as the new Speedlite 90EX which will be launched (and come bundled) with the camera. Two lenses will also be launched and this includes the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens and the  EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom (pictured above).

The Canon EOS M will be available for purchase from early October onwards. Pricing was not revealed, but Canon hinted that it will be priced between the EOS 600D and EOS 650D cameras, so expect to pay anywhere between $680-$800 for it.
