Since tablets and phablets have enough screen real estate that at least two apps can be opened simultaneously OEMs have baked in such split-screen features into their devices. Samsung probably has the most popular feature, called Multi-Window, which essentially does what I’ve already mentioned above, allows users to run two apps at once. Acer is joining the fray as well through a software update for the Iconia Tab 8.

The Acer Iconia Tab 8 isn’t an Android powerhouse but it has decent specifications that make it a good option if you want to run a few applications, browse the internet and stream media. It has an Intel Atom quadcore processor with 1GB RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. Android 4.4 comes pre-installed. There’s also the 8-inch HD display and a promised battery life of 7.5 hours.

Through the latest software update for this tablet Acer has added the split-screen mode which is meant to improve productivity by taking advantage of the 8-inch display to run two applications at once. However there aren’t a lot of apps that have support for this feature on the Iconia Tab 8, but the basics are covered, including Maps, Chrome, YouTube, Gmail, Hangouts, Calendar, Calculator, OfficeSuite and more.

It goes without saying that support for more applications will be added in subsequent software updates, so there’s no point in losing hope.
