ePlate has strong ad potential
Posted on Jan 9, 07 09:07 PM PDT
CES 2007 - If you own a fledgling business and would like to increase your brand awareness, advertising is the only way to go. Unfortunately, there are just plenty of advertising avenues in this day and age, and they range from traditional print media to the big Internet wave, radio, and TV stations. How else are you going to get your message across effectively? The ePlate from Canada is an LED brake light that boasts a scrolling programmable message every time you step foot on your brake. Located just below the license plate, it is capable of storing up to 250 characters. These messages can be programmed via an included remote control, but as a safety feature, you can't do it while you're driving.
The ePlate should retail in the region of $40 when released, which makes for a pretty effective advertising medium thanks to its freshness and the natural curiousity of a human being to finish reading a sentence. I just hope you have all your motor insurance in order as somebody might tailgate too close and kiss your bumper trying to read your message. It is currently available in the Great White North, so those living stateside can e-mail Mr. James Joy for more informationYour Comments

I have had the e-plate installed on my carr for 4 months...No hits though I still thinks it's cool, I have however been in a lenghty dispute with 2 "notice and order" to remove from the RCMP. They have tried to tell me off all the regulations it breaks they all fell flat except one sec 4.28 A vehicle on a highway may only be equipped with lamps that are capable of displaying flashes of light if.... Basically your an emergency vehicle. 4.28 1) (b) the director has given written permission and the lamps are lighted in accordance with the conditions specified by the director. Yeah right....Ther isn't even such a person anybody out there that can offer any advise?

By I just received one for Christmas. , 25/12/07 1:26 PM (CommentID #405553)
At first I thought it distracting, but now I have one, it may be a great Marketing tool?
The next urgent development needs to be a laptop IR transmitter that can quickly upload text to this device. IR was a common feature on Laptops, but has gone out of fashion. If someone has an old laptop and some programming knowledge, they could design it. The way it used to work was to print through the IR port, so it should be easy, once you know the "eplate protocol"?

Does anyone know how many watts or how big an amperage draw on this. I want to hook it up to my model railroad and make a sign that runs off of fiber optics. thanks

The units I have seen have a brake like and in my opinion is extreemly safe. In my region, if someone rear-ends you, for any reason, they are at fault. Get a good lawyer, you may be in for a win-fall.

My dealer installed mine and used one of the existing license plate mounting holes on the back of my vehicle.

They day I installed it on my car someone plowed into the back of me while reading the message, not paying attention to the road. When the police arrived the guy that hit me complained that his attention was diverted by my plate. The the police officer started questioning me about the plate wondering if it was legal or not. Worst thing I ever bought.

I talked to my auto dealership about and they said because you have to drill a hole into the back of the vehichle to run the wiring it would violate the terms of the vehichle lease.

I checked out the one on rapidadvertising.com it is the old license plate frame - very difficult to program, doesn't have the convenient apla/numeric remote control or brake light feature. Also it is the same price, but in US $$$ - more expensise, plus you have to pay for shipping.

I have one hooked up to the front and back of my vehicle connected to my running lights. That way I can control the power from inside my car. It looks great and gets lots of attention.
By Milly , 18/07/07 7:14 AM (CommentID #248299)
Will it work on my front license plate?
By Lair , 17/07/07 5:59 AM (CommentID #247079)
My friend has one and her husband or dealership said it can't be hooked up to her suv... I am going to kill 2 birds with one stone. Hook it up to license plate lights, that way it should always be on (when lights are), and don't need to worry about brake light hookups. HA, stupid husbands and dealerships.
P.S This is not a helpful site for hooking one up, nor troubleshooting.

after hooking up and putting in all the letters the brake section quite after 5 or 6 tests. got another and brake light section no work at all.

They are really no good unless you can change messages from inside the vehicle. I have two and both allow changing messages from outside the vehicle.

Just saw one today and found this site while looking for it. The scroll only comes on when your foot is on the brake.
The one I saw had way too much text for it to finish the scroll while waiting for the light to go green..... so I didn't get any contact info.

Wish I had seen this before I invested $1,000 in my vehicle rap. Cool idea.

I was worried by the DVD player in the rear mirror, but It thought that this was mild. This plate would most likely be readable only at stop lights :)

Bad Idea if you want my opinion.
There are way to many distractions while driving a nealry 4,000 pound Lethal Weapon as it is and this will just make things worse.
