IM-Me keeps your princess safe

The IM-Me text messenger from Mattel is a wireless texting device that helps keep your little ones safe from online predators who have no conscience whatsoever. Each purchase comes with a RF dongle which is connected to the USB port of a parental computer, enabling your child to text message her circle of friends who have already been added to your address book and are within the dongle range. Sounds pretty restrictive, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Being pink in color, it caters toward the female population more - hopefully Mattel will realize that even boys are preyed upon. The IM-Me will hit store shelves this summer for $64.99 a pop.

I dont think theres a range... You just have to hook that thing up to the computer and if your friend has it hooked up to the computer then you can talk... its more of an aim thing just hand held.

This looks like a pretty neat little gadget, however, I do have some questions for the people who have one already.
Does it have to be connected to the internet to be able to text people? It sounds that way, but it's not very clear.
Is the range as far as they boast? (i.e., across the country.)
Since it's wirless, it uses batteries, how long is the life on the batteries, on average?
