Powder-type RFID from Hitachi

As with everything else, RFID also gets smaller with time thanks to the wonders of miniaturization. Hitachi has now announced a new "powder" type of RFID chip which measures a miniscule 0.05mm x 0.05mm. That size, ladies and gentlemen, is roughly 64 times smaller than the current 0.4mm x 0.4mm mu-chips. These new chips will also boast a 128-bit ROM that stores a unique 38-digit ID number which can be used as an anti-counterfeit measure when it comes to admission tickets. Since it is much smaller, you would expect to see these embedded in paper currency, IDs, and gift certificates in the future. Marketing of this new RFID powder will take place in the next 2 to 3 years.
