Do you want a nuclear reactor in your backyard?
Posted on Dec 19, 07 05:15 PM PDT

Toshiba is working on a small-scale, self-contained nuclear reactor that measures only 20 x 6 feet and can produce 200 kilowatt for as long as 40 years without further maintenance. Obviously, Toshiba thinks that the system is safe enough to be installed in cities and hopes to install the first units in Japan next year. I wonder… would you like to have this near by your home?

Definitely. Pick up a military surplus RAM-3400 "geiger counter" (correctly known as a frisker) and wave the thing around outside. This is NOT a radiation free world, especially depending on geology (Good luck to those in the Granite State), but low level stuff is no problem.

As long as it's self contained, and suitably sealed, hell yes!
Background radiation is everywhere (samson, we live in the solar system, with the sun putting out a ton of background radiation constantly), so I have no problem with it.

YES! I would put it in my yard in a heartbeat. We are too dependant on this huge interconnected grid, and this would give the common person a little more control over their own electric needs.

Sounds like a good idea to me...I'd like to hear more.

Very possible, However I would want to know the long and short term cost. Both monitory and environmental.

No problem here as long as I get the cheap power. Folks are too afraid of stuff that they should not be and not afraid of those things that they should be.
