Samsung Starts Producing Slim LCD Panels

Samsung has started to roll out super slim LCD panels for their soon-to-be-released range of large size TVs. These TV sets will use edge-lit LED backlighting in order to reduce component weight, resulting in a thinner overall profile. According to Samsung, these new panels will measure a mere 10.8mm thin, whereas conventional LCDs in the 40" , 46" and 55" sizes will be approximately four times thicker. To get a better picture of what edge-lit systems are all about, they emit light from a row of LEDs located on both the top and bottom of each panel, compared to direct-lit configurations which project light forward across the whole screen from the front. Not only does the aesthetic appearance improve, mercury-free LED backlighting is also more environmentally friendly, consuming up to 60% the power of standard LCDs that rely on cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) technology.
