The device is an Ethernet IP (Internet Protocol) Camera, meaning that it comes embedded with its own web server and does not need to be plugged to a PC to function. The camera can be controlled by anything that has a web browser (cellphone, PDA, laptop, fridge…) which makes it pretty convenient, as long as you have a fast internet access. It has tiny LED lights that will help to shoot images/video in the dark and there is even an infra-red light that allows one to use the webcam as a remote-control! That’s very very geeky. Sanyo has launched its Hovica Webcam and online service last week. We reported about this You can set it up as a surveillance device. If it sense motion it will send you a photo via email. You can monitor your house remotely, by connecting via a web-browser to the camera. A cute user-interface lets you pan/tilt/zoom
The communication is secured by the SSL protocol (the one used for online transactions). The network interface can be via wired Ethernet (RJ45) or by Wifi, using an optional Compact Flash module.
On paper, this is the coolest webcam that I know of.
