Apple SDK in February 2008

Apple has officially given February as a target date for their iPhone SDK.

“Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users.” (Steve)

Steve Jobs also confirmed that the SDK would work for the iPod Touch, which shares the same code with the iPhone.

It remains to be seen how “open” the platform is going to be. As we said in our previous post (“iPhone SDK, open or closed?”), it is possible that applications might need a “green light” from Apple before they can be executed on the iPhone, just like console makers do.
