Murata Ultra-thin Piezoelectric Speakers Are Waterproof

Are we moving closer to waterproof phones becoming the norm in the future? Kyoto-based Murata Manufacturing Company has come up with the world’s first ultra-thin (0.9mm) waterproof piezoelectric speaker (VSLBG1914E1400-T0). This speaker can be used as a cost-effective solution in mobile devices such as PDAs, digital cameras and cell phones for better quality sound output. Conventional speakers require covering the sound output holes with waterproof sheets to achieve waterproof quality, but since these are already waterproof, the cost of sheet material may be reduced. They’re currently available with the sample price listed at 250 Yen ($2.70) per unit.
