terminal-vid-chatWhat you see above will definitely require a second look – in fact, you might actually end up rubbing your eyes for good measure, too. After all, it is not some kind of specially concocted piece of ASCII art, but rather, it is a still image that has been captured from a real video chat session. Yes sir, it looks like there is now a cool way to represent your video chat session with another person in a terminal window in ASCII format. What makes the entire shebang all the more impressive is, it will require approximately 13k of code to have it happen, now how about that?

The app’s name happens to be known as p2pvc (point to point video chat), and of course, you can be sure that this is not meant for everyone out there. After all, it was first and foremost written in order to have it run on Linux systems, and one would also need to go through downloading the source code from Github before performing a compilation yourself.

Needless to say, the coolness factor is there – but as to how long your eyes will be able to take it remains to be seen. It would be far better to stick to vanilla Skype if you would like to get some video calls done sans any headaches. Apart from that, it is also unencrypted, in order for the audio and video transmitted to be clear. There will also be no NAT support, which means there might not be the kind of smooth performance over a WAN connection.
