algorithm_auctionDuring auctions, all sorts of items can be sold, ranging from the novel to the extremely rare and priceless, but now it looks like one can even bid on codes. This is thanks to online art platform Artsy who has teamed up with programming collective Ruse Laboratories to host what they’re calling the first ever code auction.

So what goes down in such auctions? Basically a variety of codes will be put up for sale and the winners of the bids will be given the code that has been inscribed on a 3D printed cuneiform tablet, along with keys to a Github portal where there will be additional material waiting for them. There will be all sorts of code available for bidding include the original code for “Hello, World” which programmers should be very familiar with.

According to Fernando Gil of Ruse Laboratories, “Even if they don’t remember their first kiss, every programmer remembers their first ‘Hello, World.'” Like we said earlier, there will also be OKCupid’s algorithm for sale. This is the algorithm the dating website uses to match people who they think are compatible.

The Algorithm Auction was launched last week online and will run until the 27th of March, which is this Friday. Starting bids will range between $1,000-$2,000 and if you’re interested in taking a look or maybe putting a bid yourself, head on over to its website for the details.
