For years Amazon has used traditional courier companies like UPS to deliver packages but it seems like in the future the company might handle that side of the business on its own as well. A new report in The Seattle Times claims that Amazon is considering leasing 20 Boeing 767 jets to set up its own delivery service. The scribe has been told by severan unnamed executives from the cargo industry that Amazon has already reached out to multiple cargo aircraft lessors in order to secure enough planes that it’s able to launch this service by the end of January 2016.

Just last month another report claimed that Amazon is running a secret air freight business out of an old DHL facility in Wilmington, mentioning the possibility that Amazon could eventually eliminate its reliance on shipping companies by shifting to its own service.

The previous report claimed that four leased Boeing 767s were delivering cargo to four locations near Amazon distribution centers, Allentown, PA, Ontario, CA, Oakland, CA and Tampa, FL. It was also confirmed by the report that DHL, FedEx and UPS were not behind these flights.

So far Amazon has not confirmed or denied reports that it’s looking to move into the air cargo service. If such a service does launch it remains to be seen if Amazon will use it only for shipping products that it sells or whether it’s going to turn this into a proper air cargo service and ferry cargo for other clients as well.
