coleco chameleonBack in the good old days before CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs were invented, gamers who wanted to play games on the console had to rely on cartridges. These were pretty big and bulky devices that plugged into the console that contained data for a particular game (or games). Sometimes they wouldn’t work and gamers had to blow on it to remove the dust, something that gamers these days probably never had to deal with.

Now you would assume that by now, cartridge-based gaming would have long died, or at least be on its way out, but apparently gaming company Coleco has other ideas. The company has recently announced a partnership with Retro Video Game Systems in which they will be developing a new cartridge-based console called the Coleco Chameleon that is planned for a launch in 2016.

According to Retro Video Game Systems president Mike Kennedy, “It will take gamers and their families back to a simpler time where games were all about great gameplay and fun factor.” The console will allow gamers to play 8-, 16-, and 32-bit games which apparently is a “growing and popular genre”. We admit that playing retro games is fun, but investing in developing a new console just to play them does seem a bit like overkill.

It is expected to be demoed at the New York Toy Fair in February 2016 and will be available for purchase later in the year, but unfortunately no word on pricing just yet.
