09/13/2011, [IDF 2011] Earlier today, Intel showed us a computer processor (CPU) that was running on solar energy from a single small solar cell. Although Intel didn’t provide the specific voltage numbers, it’s not hard to imagine that a solar cell can only generate very little energy. Anyone who has tried to charge a smartphone (or even an AAA battery) with solar energy knows this all too well.
09/02/2011, Dryers are a great way to get your clothes dried in a relatively short amount of time. However the costs of running a dryer constantly will definitely result in electricity bills that may give you a heart attack, which is why Miele has unveiled what they’re calling the “world’s first” dryer to use the heat of the sun to dry your clothes.
09/01/2011, Let’s face the facts – a robotic chariot at this point in time will probably be unable to strike fear in the hearts of slaves in an arena, compared to those Roman machines of war that had knives at the wheels to literally cut down the competition. Well, at least Bob Schneeveis and Grant Grundler’s Solar Electric Robot Chariot is a start, where this particular chariot made an appearance at […]
08/31/2011, A team of scientists in Kentucky has claimed that they’ve managed to “tweak” an inexpensive semiconductor to generate hydrogen from water using sunlight. Using an alloy that is formed by replacing 2% of the antimony in gallium nitride, it is said to have the right electrical properties that enables solar light energy to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through a process known as photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Since […]
08/29/2011, You know how it is during the summer when it becomes sweltering hot, and the moment you step out from the bathroom after a nice and refreshing bath, you start to feel beads of sweat pouring out from your brow again. Even when you go for a drive and need a place to park, looking for a shady spot can be quite tricky – although things might change with this […]
08/26/2011, Last week we reported that a 13 year old teen, Aidan Dwyer, managed to create a solar array that was inspired by tree branches and the Fibonacci sequence. At that time it was reported that he managed to achieve 50% more efficiency compared to regular solar designs, but as it turns out that might not have been the case.
08/22/2011, Researchers and scientists have managed to discover a method that will enable LCD displays juice themselves up using nothing but solar power, indoor lighting or even the device’s very own backlight. To put it in a nutshell, imagine delivering some much needed battery power to your smartphone that is sputtering along to its final 10% of battery simply by pointing it towards the sun – without having to plug it […]
08/19/2011, Solar panels are great as they help to generate power in place of using electricity, but unfortunately solar panels require proper positioning and good weather conditions to reach maximum efficiency, and for some reason it took a 13 year old boy to figure out something so painstakingly obvious that manages to increase the efficiency of solar panels.
08/17/2011, So we know that Portland’s got its own Electric Avenue where you can pull up in your electric vehicle to give it’s batteries a boost while you take a break, but what about an electric vehicle charger that actually needs no kind of connection to the local power grid? For that, you will have to make a trip over to the parking lot that is located between a SunTrust bank […]
08/17/2011, PC users should be familiar with Logitech’s K750 solar powered keyboard, and Mac users if you were feeling a bit left out, the good news is that the Mac version of the K750 is now available.
08/16/2011, Taking advantage of solar energy is one of the ways we can forge forward into the future without relying on other forms of non-renewable energy that burden and erode the earth’s ecosystem even further, but advances in solar energy have been rather slow to say the least, with its efficiency levels in solar panels remaining relatively low – where we would have liked to see higher figures. Safatul Islam, a […]
08/16/2011, The next time you turn on the tap in your home with wanton abandon, think again of the rest of the world and folks who do not have enough clean water to drink. Well, we’re pleased to say that rural communities in Madagascar have a chance at a better quality of life now, especially when they are on the receiving end of safe access drinking water and electricity thanks to […]
08/16/2011, Solar power is something that we do not deny will make the world a better place to live in, assuming it can be harnessed more efficiently than it is today. While solar panels are still very expensive to manufacture, hence the prohibitively high cost that consumers cannot afford, there is also the issue of the manufacturing process to be “green” and eco-friendly. What about the idea of spraying solar cells […]
08/15/2011, Everybody’s going green these days, and it’s been reported that even the soldiers in Australia will soon be joining the movement. The Australian National University (ANU) have managed to create wearable lightweight solar panels that convert light directly into electricity using SILVER solar cell technology. Designed for the Department of Defense, these silver cells have a bendable radius of around a few centimeters, which allow it to be used as […]
