magicJack for free phone calls
Posted on: March 12, 2007

Seriously, the advent of Skype has made communicating with other people all over the world affordable, but there are still some of us who want more - for instance, low phone bills without messing around hardware-based VoIP services and yet want quality that surpasses Skype calls. magicJack could be the solution, as this device resembles a USB flash drive and comes with a phone jack behind. When plugged in, the magicJack will install the necessary software automatically, enabling you to hook up any regular house phone and start making calls to both landline and cellphone numbers for free. Other features include caller ID, call forwarding, and call waiting. There is no word on pricing, and I still wonder whether there are any access charges attached to the magicJack.

Yes, I do have the same problem. When calling using a calling card, the number is always busy busy, so I have to use my cell phone & use my munutes instead.

I ordered my majicjack a few weeks ago and it worked perfect. Now all of a sudden it stopped working. When people call, I cant even hear them. I'm ready to ship it back. I had the same problem to with trying to get a live person. It says click on here, then it just gives you a whole bunch of things to do. This is the only phone I have right now. So I think I might be stuck with this piece of junk. Did you ever have this problem when someone calls you, and you cant hear them?

I have not even ordered one yet. I have a few questions and cant even reach a live person from Magic Jack. If I can't reach them before I buy it what will happen afterwards

this magic junk is a waste of time.... it worked GREAT the first month.... and long behold tech issues... they say click here for a live person... well where the hell are they... i've upgraded the system more than beyonce could upgrade jay-z... and i still get this broken record sound.. people wont even call me on this line because of the aggrivation. 20 bucks a year is still 2 much to pay for this junk... you give me quality i dont mind paying a regular phone bill. as long as i can talk crystal clear. they said it is compatiable with all programs/software... well then y mine is junk i dunno... DONT BUY MAGIC JACK

What ads are you talking about? I have no ads popping up on my desktop. The only ads that come up are the ones that are within the MagicJack Console. If this is the only 'advertising' I have to deal with, I can live with it.

really at 20 bucks a year, I hardly call that being "stupid". Actually the high cost of many years for conventional land-line use, I consider Magic Jack technology to be a nice break, especially for my pocketbook... keep up the great work, magic jack, you have my vote !!

hEY SHAWN,
All you need to do is goto the website and look for the place to talk to a live person and you will get the help from a live operator. It will be like you are talking through instant messenger. Alright? I hope this helps!

I bought two, and they're AWESOME!!! I have some pointers though.... DO NOT try to use your sound device and microphone through your computer, it most likely CANNOT modulate well enough, you NEED a real phone plugged in, for flawless operation. If you're having problems and haven't tried this yet, do it! It does take a few days once installed to take incoming calls, but outbound is immediate. I got two, and haven't had a problem other than waiting for them to activate all the way. They work perfectly and sound great(through a real phone). If you can't get it to work at first, you'll see a link on the program to get the "Update", install it. If you haven't received yours in the mail yet, be patient, once it gets there, it will have been worth it! As for calling overseas, once installed you can click the link to the site, and sign up for .02c a minute long distance outside US/Canada. If you use a real phone through it and you have a decent internet connections( I recommend 4mb or faster!!) you can save Thousands on phone service with these babies, LOOK OUT Phone Companies!!!!

ok you workers of other phone companies, now hear this: you better get a wet towel because magicJack is about to pass you. magicJack is leaving a huge cloud of dust behind it. You will breathe it.
magicJack is for real, and will not look back.
Wow! I am in the midst of history in the making - TELCOM REVOLUTION II has begun - and magicJack is the clear winner!

Amen- No problems here either.. I've bought two already. I hooked mine up to my vista (with the service pack)No problems.. The second one I sent with my daughter who is moving the the UK. she took hers over. Hooked it right up.And she calls home to anyone she wants. Calls are crystal clear.Voicemail options work fine and I am getting rid of my home phone because it's such a great product. Not only am I getting rid of the home phone... I am buying 10 more of them and passing them out to people as gifts. The phone my daughter used over in England was an analog phone. They bought an adaptor for the actual phone and it works perfectly. I pay $70.00 bucks a month for my phone and was buying $20.00 phone cards a month. I'm saving myself $1080.00 a year just for those two services.Thats not including the long distance changes I was getting charged ontop of it.All i can suggest is people let the software install and when it is done. THEN plug the telephone into the majicjack. I love it. It's a god send to me and my wallet.......
By jennifer , 13/05/08 4:29 PM (CommentID #675398)
Arg! i use it and will order mine online for $39.99 and pay about $3.00 S&H and it's cheaper than what your offering.

I use my normal land line with majicjack. I havent had one problem with it what so ever. My daughter took the 2nd majicjack to europe with her and again hooked an old analog phone up and it worked great.I even have vista.I love it. I am buying some for family as gifts... Did you use the optimize feature on the majicjack? If not try it :)

The MJ has generally worked great for me in the one month I've had it. However, I can only make calls with the 'softpad' on the PC. The actual phone unit cannot make calls. Tech Support doesn't have the answer. Can anyone else out there make calls with the actual phone unit? I've tried corded, cordless, and GE (as tech support told me GE was the 'most compatible' brand). Thanks. Email me at opieandy at yahoo.com.

I have been using my mj for a while. I am a web designer and while I am online I listen to xm radio. I have 3 computers using the same cavalier dsl connection and my magicjack works fine. have a 2nd on the way now. when you first get mj it says it takes about 2 hours for it to activate, mine took about hour and 15 min. no I dont have a local number either. my town- shows pending on the site Norfolk VA but I knew that before purchase, also if you read on the site it says you ARE allowed to have 1 free change of number. (that means, when local numbers for your area are available you can change it for free.) after initial install I was getting dial tone but couldn't dial out and incomming calls would not work either. but that was due to it was not fully activated. I also had to run the magic fix and then reboot and it has been 100% since. I also use it at work with my laptop (xp) using a wifi signal. it even worked using free wifi signal in downtown Hampton VA. I too think the negative comments are from competition to the device. It also works perfect using my samsung bluetooth headset and if I load xm from the browser that open through magic jack I can listen to music through the bluetooth headset.
If you did not do your research before buying a new product (NEWS FLASH) shame on you. yes high speed internet is required it is repeatedly mentioned on the site. (NEWS FLASH) ITS V.O.I.P high speed internet is required.
for all you people who have the magicjack and claim you hate it and want to get rid of it please send them to me. email me for contact details

A 2nd MJ I have isn't in use because I keep trying to find out if there's a chance for an area code 760 in the Palm Springs, CA area. So far haven't been able to contact anyone so haven't gotten a number yet and it's been over a month. Can you help me?

Magicjack is great... if you don't mind spyware, and them using your call's to modify their marketing and sale of your personal information to marketers. Did you know the first thing that happens when you install the device is that Magicjack replaces your system.dll with a new one? Don't worry; it probably makes your computer work better! Also you get to see all kinds of advertisements... the Prodigy model all over again. Welcome back to 1992. So you purchase the hardware, and a license to use it, and then they say they have to advertise to you to support the product? Oh and if you decide you want to fight them about your information being released, you have also signed away your ability to fight them and all arbitration takes place in South Florida, so at least you can enjoy the sun while you get reamed.

If you are looking into MJ .. stop and go elsewhere. Is cheap, installs easily, incoming reception is good ... but people can't hear me and the support is absolutely, incredibly BAD. Actually it is non-existent. If any one can help with audio issues, please let me know. If anyone has a support line that accurate, please let me know. Forum has been discontinued (there is a message) and apparently Live-Talk (tech support) has been as well.
I was really hoping this was going to be a hit ... but it truly seems to be closer to a scam.

Well the device does work if you have a fast intrnet connection, If youhave the basic three in one package that most ISP provide then you will experience really lousy audio connection,
Also if you are running Windows vista SP1 and install magicjack, It might not work, the only way to work around this is to install windows vista without a service pack, then install magicjack, once install you could could upgrade to sp1 and your magicjack will work, For futher support or more info, feel free to drop my new forum for magicjack unofficial support center at www.magicjacksupport.tk and will gladlyhelp you out or answer any question ya will like.
take care and stay bless

I am afraid this is one of those internet rip-offs. Still does not work correctly it seems and incoming calls still does not work. Stop payment has been ordered. Remember the old saying "If it sounds to good to be true then most likely it isn't ". I don't think Ma Bell or any other phone company has anything to worry about.

By Bob , 11/04/08 10:45 AM (CommentID #625030)
Hi my fellow mj Resellers, this is Bob from pevoosow.com.
I was in Tech Chat and chatted with Marivic.
Here’s a fix for your customers that have a magicJack and can’t receive calls from non-mj phones:
Marivic: 1Please unplug your magicJack. Now go to “Start” in Windows and click on “run”. In there type regedit and press enter.
Marivic: 2Now click on + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE.
Marivic: 3Click on + sign next to SYSTEM
Marivic: 4Click on + sign next to CurrentControlSet
Marivic: 5Click on + sign next to Enum
Marivic: 6Now find folder called USB. Right click on that and click on “Permissions”. In permissions click on the check mark called “Allow” to the right of “Full Control”.
Marivic: 7Click Ok.
Marivic: 8Now click on + sign next to USB and then find the two folders called “Vid1307″, right click on one at a time and select delete.
Marivic: 9Now click on - Sign next to USB.
Marivic: 10Right click on Folder called USBSTOR and allow permissions.
Marivic: 11Now click on + sign next to USBSTOR.
Marivic: 12Find the folders called “CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev” and “Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev”
Marivic: 13Right click on those one at a time and delete them.
Marivic: 14Now exit Regedit and then plug your magicJack in.
Marivic: You can tell your customers to do the steps.
I hope this helps your customers with the same problem.
Personally, I don’t recommend customers to use regedit, but this is what mj recommends. Oh, well. I wish your customers good luck.

I have been using magicJack(TM) now since February 6, 2008. I am now a Reseller. I make all of my long distance calls with the magicJack.
As soon as I get the 72 units I ordered, they will be sold within a week!
25 of them are already pre-sold @ $50 each.
10 of them are going to Albany, NY. They will be sold in to days @ $50 each too!
So the other 37 will be sold right here in Newburgh, NY. I already have 15 of them promised to people who will buy them the first day I receive them.
WOW, magicJack, keep up the good work!

Every thing bad that I have read about magicJack apears to be made by people who have nothing better in life to do but to complain. I have had MJ for over a month now. It works fine on my Vista laptop and my XP desktops. The only problem that I have found is that if I am running to many applications, especially ones that use the net, causes MJ to stutter. I can fax from and to it. It installed easily. I tried it on dial up. It works but it stutters, which proved a point to me, a high speed connection without a bunch of apps using up the bandwidth is an optimal setting. Don't beleave the bad reviews.
By David , 10/04/08 5:39 AM (CommentID #622086)
not only are the support guys idiots, but they don't pay attention to what you type on the chat. I told them that i tried the MagicJack in all USB ports. No sooner did I type that ... he asked me to try it in another port. I suspect they are handling multiple people at a time.
I also have a problem w/busy signals when the unit is down. When it's up, call quality is excellent, but their support is abyssmal.

I'm having the same problem. I can't receive any incoming calls. When calling you either get a busy signal or a recording comes on that says that the number is a non-working one. I've contacted the Tech Chat probably seven time but to no avail. There was only one guy there who seemed like he knew what he was talking about. He asked me if I was running a firewall or antivirus (and I am). He told me to turn them off and reload but that still hasn't helped. I've tried to ask them to switch me to a 'working' number but again- no assistance. Does anyone have input on this?

MJ is over hyped not ready for "Prime Time"
Tech Chat is useless waist of time, your better off searching the internet, you might find answers to installation problems.
My MJ only works about 20% of the time.

MJ is over hyped not ready for "Prime Time"
Tech Chat is useless waist of time, your better off searching the internet, you might find answers to installation problems.
My MJ only works about 20% of the time.
Don't waist your money on MJ!

I cannot get mine to log in to make a call. no help from there online customer service. no phone # to talk to anybody about this. I recommend not to get this piece of junk. There custumer service is by far the worst in the nation. A total scam.

I have had my magicjack for 2 days. the only thing wrong is that on incomming calls, my phone doesn't ring, so unless I am sitting at the computer and see an incoming call I dont know that I have one.
Nothing regarding this on their webpage and cannot get into the tech chat . . . anyone else experiencing this?

I just received my MagicJack today, and it won't work for me with Vista. I have tried to get help, but it won't even click in. I see they are selling these at the rate of 1 every 3 seconds, so that sounds like that is the problem. I'm sending my three back. I'll buy later when they "get it together."

One thing the adds express is that you will have to have highspeed internet. When I got mine I had not paid attention to this important item either. I gave my unit to a friend with high speed. Works great for outgoing calls. Still having dificulity with incoming calls. Yes, it does not work with dialup. Also I was not able to get a local tel. number.

Please contact the magicjack folks, I have found them to be VERY helpful and work out any problem.Did you use the help line they provide?

I highly doubt what you all are saying. I've been using magicJack for a long time. It serves me good, as well as my relatives and my neighbors. There may be some technical problems, though, but their tech support agents take good care of it. There was one time when I chatted with one of them, and within 40 minutes I felt like I was chatting with a professional IT master and all the issues with my magicJack were resolved. Is that what you call DUMB? I don't usually defend people but I think it is you people who are dumb. I was able to anjoy every feature that their site has promised, with no flaw. I think you guys are from Verizon, Skype, or what else providers being overtaken by magicJack, because as you see magicJack is rapidly overwhelming your telephone providers. Now, if you people are dumb and not smart enough to be a magicJack subscriber, please don't discriminate those people from magicJack because you are just making it obvious for people to figure out that you people are just jealous about the magicJack's idea. Again, please don't call people words such as DUMB which clearly represents yourselves.

For all you guys that want to use the magic jack over dial up. I'm sorry but thats your problem. For the magic jack to run correctly you need broadband, or atleast dsl.

Yeah buddy ..its for B-R-O-A-D-B-A-N-D (thats how its works in dial-up). 2008 not 1998.

I just recieved my magic jack yesterday and couldn't wait to plug it in, unfortunately when I did, the first thing I got was an annoying constant beep. I went to the website and downloaded their fix it program, downloaded it and after that I did get a dial tone but when I tried calling people, instead of having a clear conversation, they opposing persons were constantly breaking up. Instead of Hello...it was h-h-e-e-l-l-l-l-o-o. I've tried going to magicjack's website to geta live rep for an audio correction, but when I tried clicking on the links, no pop up help menus, would pop up. I have dial up, I'm wondering if this could be part of my issue. Does anyone have the actual customer service support phone number with a live agent? The 561-215-1407 number I found online, doesn't work. Thanks for any info you can give. Jen

What a disappointment. I have had the MagicJack for about 3 months and it still won't work correctly. I want to return it or get help fixing it can't get any help. If you have Vista I would especially advise you not to buy it.
Price is what you pay, value is what you get. No Value. It's a shiny piece of plastic with a nice blue light. Perhaps I can use it as a night light since no one at the company responds to my request for help and had the audacity to tell me they didn't have time to help me because they had over 220 people on the online chat trying to get help and to wait my turn. I waited over 3 hours to get help and when they finally got to me they just gave me the basic URL back to their main website to use MagicFix. I pride myself on my ability to troubleshoot and used every online tool they had and read every piece of advice I could find to resurrect my MagicJack and to no avail. If anyone wants to buy a magicjack night light, please let me know.
