Palm Foleo mobile companion

Palm Foleo mobile companion

Palm has just released a Linux-based 2.5lbs "mobile companion" called Foleo. It is capable of running basic productivity software such as email, web browser, word processing and so on... It is an "instant-on" (no boot) device with a full keyboard and a 10.2" display. The manufacturer claims that it has a battery life of 5 hours. It connects to the internet via WiFi or via a phone (Foleo>(Bluetooth)>Phone>(phone network)>internet).

Palm presents it as a "new category" of devices but I don't think that it is so new. There were various attempts in the past at providing a lighter, instant-on platform connected via Wifi or BT modem. However, this one has a good design, I have to admit. The question is: is there a market for this? Without a native Microsoft Exchange capability (I mean mobile outlook - there's an Exchange support via Versamail), it's going to be hard to convince professionals (and their IT departments) to use it and at $499, it's hard to get consumers to buy it. So it all depends on how much value it really adds and how easy it is to use. At the moment, I doubt that Palm can turn this into a commercial success but I'd love to get my hands on one because it looks so sexy.

Second opinion on PCmag

Specs:
- 10.2-inch color screen (1024x600)
- SD card slot
- CompactFlash slot
- VGA out (1024x768)

- Bluetooth
- Wi-Fi.
- 256MB of RAM

Next time, use a Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 processor, a decent amount of RAM, a 2.5" 10mm height SATA drive bay, an external CompactFlash slot (no SD cards, please), a 14.1" XGA TFT transflective display, GPL the source (all of it), and use a touchpad with 3 buttons and a vertical scroll zone. The Foleo is interesting, but it lacks enough processing power for my needs.

This is getting close to what I've been looking for for years. Instant on is good, smaller size than a notebook and what looks like better battery life. But still too big for me. 7 or 8" screen like the now elderly PSION Netbook Pro would be just right. Not sure such a thing exixts.

Not a completely bad idea. Unsure how the services work, but if I could use it to connect through my cell phone to the internet would definately be better than looking at my 2x3in. screen. The instant on would definately be appreciated. With the compact flash you could put 12gigs of space and have plenty of room for internet and document files. But at over half the cost of a decent laptop, plus the memory card, not sure if it's really worth it.

Take a look at the HTC Shift. It has a 7-inch display and runs Windows Vista! No instant-on, however...

not a comment on this post, but rather on the site feeds. feeds are supposed to take out all the unwanted parts of a website and provide users content only. recently, I have realized your addition of advertisement banners in every single post. it really takes the focus off the content and the funny thing is that the banner isn't shown in the html version.

guaranteed flop. it's a silly idea... besides syncing your phone with your laptop you now also need to sync this? Why a crippled laptop-ish when you have the full size laptop already? because you need this thing only if you need or already have a laptop.
