STMicroelectronics has released a 3-axis gyroscope that is able to measure angular rates along three orthogonal axes accurately, despite coming in a small form factor. This is an interesting development as it could see the widespread adoption of realistic-motion user interfaces in all kinds of consumer applications sometime down the road. The sensor offers 360° angular-rate detection for high-precision 3D gesture and motion recognition in cellphones, game controllers, personal navigation systems and other portable devices. The ball is in the developers’ court now to conjure some magical software to take full advantage of such a gyroscope in the future, eh?
