New Nanocoating Can Reduce Reflections On Glass And Prevent Scratches

At some point in time we’ve all taken a gadget out in the sun, only to find that the reflection from the sun was too strong, making the display almost unreadable. Now the brains over at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg, Germany, have come up with a new nanocoating that can be used in displays and spectacles that not only reduce reflections, it’s also scratch-proof and easy to clean. Would you believe that they got their inspiration from moths? Apparently the moth’s facet eyes are perfectly non-reflective, allowing them to better hide from predators. So while we’re not trying to wear spectacles that’d turn us into moths, it’s still cool to look forward to a coating that will reduce glare and prevent scratches.
