IEEE hopes to standardize power, wired, wireless LANs

The IEEE has put their mind to come up with a standard that will bridge wired and wireless network technologies throughout your humble abode. This new draft standard has been called P1905.1, where it is touted to “provide a common, protocol-agnostic interface”, targeting not only 802.11 Wi-Fi and 802.3 Ethernet but also the less well-known MoCa (multimedia over co-ax) spec and the 1901 powerline standard. Basically, P1905.1 has its main concern on the front end side of things for applications to “speak” without having to worry about whether the data being sent out over the network is being transmitted wirelessly, over wires or both. It sounds like a dream, since all technologies which P1905.1 will bridge work perfectly well together, resulting in less headaches when setting up devices in your own home.
