While you’re pretty comfortable with your smartphone’s camera, devices of the future might feature a totally different camera design. The folks over at Pelican Imaging have come up with a camera module that uses an array of 25 micro-cameras instead of a single camera lens and they think it will revolutionize camera phones. The secret behind this setup is similar to how HDR works, the hardware is designed to capture multiple images and then use post-processing software to assemble all the pictures into one high-quality photo. The company cares less about cramming more megapixels into a phone and is instead looking for the best way to pair an image sensor with a lens (or lenses). The company is planning to license the technology to component and handset makers and hopefully it’ll put an end to the megapixel myth on small devices.
