KDDI has just introduced something new in Japan – the haptic smartphone which is still in its prototype phase, relying on Kyocera technology and display. What makes this smartphone different from the rest of the haptic devices out there would be having multiple layers on the display itself, putting to shame all the others that just vibrate with the same intensity all the time.

To get a better idea, it works in the same way as that of a camera’s shutter button, where you can “feel” a bunch of layers now whenever you press on your smartphone’s display, letting your finger(s) feel the actual sensation of how much pressure you actually apply to the display.

While the demonstration model at KDDI’s booth paraded just a couple of haptic layers, Kyocera has confirmed that they are able to offer up to seven layers on the entire screen’s surface. No idea on how soon can we see this technology be implemented in future smartphones and tablets, but we are already salivating ahead in anticipation.
