Redfish has announced its iDVM Digital Multimeter that will be connected to an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad (all iOS devices here, so Android smartphone owners will just have to make do without it for the moment). Just what does the iDVM Digital Multimeter do? Well, it will connect to the aforementioned iOS-powered devices sans wires so that users can acquire, visualize, and share electrical measurement data on their Apple devices. The iDVM app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store just in case you are interested – is that reason enough for you to get an iPhone or iPod touch if you haven’t done so already?

Patrick O’Hara, Redfish Instruments’ president and CEO has this to say, “The unique pairing of the iPhone or iPad with a digital multimeter provides a user experience that is truly revolutionary. Not since the advent of the LCD has the multimeter been so substantially enhanced.”

Traditional multimeters have failed to open up a way for easy exporting or saving of data, but the iDVM steps in to solve this problem, as it allows a user to log data over an extended period of time with the iPhone or iPad functioning as the storage device. For instance, service engineers will utilize the iDVM to collect data and store it in a report so that they can submit it to their clients, or perhaps even use it to stash data on the voltmeter for their own reference. Targeting a wide range of users, including automotive technicians, advanced embedded systems engineers, and electrical or building contractors, you can pick up the iDVM for $220 a pop from June 1st onwards.
