Amazon logoAs if replacing bookstores (and a whole lot of other retail outlets) wasn’t enough, it looks like Amazon has set its sights to conquer something new: the book publishing industry. It has been reported that Amazon has set up a publishing program that will put the company head to head against other publishers in the business – the folks who supply books to Amazon to sell.

Amazon’s publishing program has be set up and is running with the aid of publishing veteran, Laurence Kirshbaum, to promote brand-name fiction and non-fiction; in both physical and eBook formats. The company has also been alleged to have offered deals to the top authors signed by other publishers. No word on whether it has been successful at doing so, but the first author to be signed with Amazon is Tim Ferriss. He is the author of the self-help books: “The 4-Hour Workweek” and “The 4-Hour Body”.

Amazon is set to publish 122 books this fall. There’s no telling how successful Amazon is going to be at publishing, but seeing how it’s doing well in other areas, Amazon’s latest foray could prove to be a gold mine. Plus, it would also be interesting to see if Amazon will be selling its books in the stores and eStores of its competition (Barnes & Noble, iBooks etc).
