Technology and advancement are always double-edged swords – take gunpowder for instance. Used for peaceful purposes, it can be used in fireworks to light up the night sky with a splendid display of light and sound, and for nefarious means, it can maim and kill. So too with certain apps on phones, where a Japanese firm recently got into hot soup with their ‘boyfriend tracker’ app Kare Log that enabled folks who are suspicious of their partners’ activities to track their movements as well as calls made – without the victim being able to know about it.

This app more or less targets ladies who want to know whether their husbands have picked up the art of philandering. Such a service won’t be free though, as a basic monthly charge will be levied, but that money translates to the end-user being provided with the location of the phone and the amount of energy remaining in its battery. Throw in more dough and you are privy to details such as the ability to look into the phone’s call log, checking out sensitive information such as dates, times and call duration.

Since the app runs in the background, it is pretty much spyware at its most malicious. So far, the app seemed to be quite a success, seeing 24,000 downloads in just ten weeks.
