Toshiba Excite X10 - the Regza brand will not appear on the U.S. units

[CES 2012] Toshiba is coming to CES 2012 with one of the most brilliant gadget of the show: the Toshiba Excite X10 tablet is the “world’s thinnest 10-inch tablet” and is beautifully designed. This comes as a total surprise since the last Toshiba 10-inch tablet, the Thrive, was not really top of its class in terms of industrial design.

The Excite X10 is 7.7 mm (0.3 inch) thin which is over 1mm less than the iPad 2 (8.8 mm / 0.34 inch) and weighs only 1.2 pounds (535g), a full 11% less than its Apple competitor. I particularly appreciate the attention the designers paid to the details, for example, the physical buttons are beautifully crafted and so well integrated visually on the sides that you barely notice them. (please note that the unit in the picture is a japanese one with the  Regza brand, it will not have this brand in the US)

Amazingly, despite its ultra thin form factor, the Android tablet offers all the standard connectivity one would expect in a mobile computing device. All the standard ports are available on board, including a micro-USB, a HDMI out port and a micro-SD card slot!

The physical buttons on the side are beautifully crafted and almost invisible

Packaged in a stylish body which features  a  high-quality magnesium alloy surface on the back and  scratch-resistant Corning  Gorilla  Glass with an anti-smudge coating on the display, the Excite X10 boasts Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 1.2GHz multicore processor, 1GB LPDDR2 RAM, 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 (16:9 ratio) Autobrite Display, 5.0MP rear-facing camera with LED flash, and 2.0MP front-facing camera.

All the standard ports!

We were lucky enough to see the device briefly prior to the show, and we saw it running Android Honeycomb with minimal customization from Toshiba. Except for the practical file manager and the DLNA compatible Toshiba Media Player, the user interface was native Android. The information we have today states that the Excite X10 runs “latest Android technology”, so we assume that the version we are going to see later at the Toshiba event will run Android 4.0 (ICS).

The pricing is standard as well, the 16GB model will retail for $529.99 and the 32GB for $599.99. It is slightly more expensive than the iPad2 on the entry model, but frankly,  I would be willing to pay $30 extra to own the thinnest 10-inch tablet in the world with a beautiful design.

Thinness comparison: Excite X10: 7.7 mm / 0.3 inch – Xyboard 10.1/Xoom 2: 8.8 mm – iPad 2: 8.8 mm /0.34 inch – Galaxy Tab 10.1: 8.6 mm – Asus Transformer Prime: 8.3mm
