Isn’t it creepy if there was a psychic around you, who is able to read your mind and “speak” to you without having to open his or her mouth? Of course, mothers tend to have that ability as well, where shooting just one look is enough to have the child scurrying away, receiving the undisclosed message to either clear the room, practice the piano, or stop playing video games. Having said that, a recent study that was published on PLoS Biology known as ‘Reconstructing Speech from Human Auditory Cortex’ points toward a future that might see a computer convert brain activities into an audio format. Carefully constructed computer algorithms will read one’s thoughts, decoding and reconstructing them afterwards in order to be played back in sound. This technology is no doubt in its infancy, but it does bring one to an utopian society of what the future might hold. Imagine having a machine read and process your thoughts – I would love to see this in government organizations in order to save time in filling up endless forms. Of course, if used in the wrong hands, the results would be disastrous as well, but that is another story for a different day.
