As most travelers by plane are aware by now, liquids are a no-no to bring aboard the aircraft. This is due to the potential security risks of dangerous liquids that might be smuggled aboard the plane disguised as a regular bottle of water. For some of you guys this isn’t really that big a deal, after all refreshments can be found in the departure lounge and on the plane itself, but for those who find it highly inconvenient, you’re in luck as a device dubbed the INSIGHT100 has been created to scan the safety of liquids which could result in airport security letting you bring your liquids on board.

Developed by Cobalt Light Systems, the INSIGHT100 uses a laser beam to shine certain spectra of light onto the test subject. The wavelengths that bounce back then determine if the liquid inside the container is potentially dangerous and will be able to sort the safe liquids from the harmful ones. The system can also be updated from time to time that allows authorities to add new security threats in the future. The system will also be able to scan through clear, colored or opaque plastic or glass containers measuring up to 3L, and so far the developers have claimed a false alarm rate of less than 1.5%.

The INSIGHT100 was recently approved by the European Civil Aviation Conference to be used as an alarm resolver alongside the pre-boarding X-ray machines. Hopefully its success in Europe will soon see its adoption by airport security around the world. In the meantime check out the video above to see the INSIGHT100 in action.
