Google is constantly looking for ways to improve their online services to the masses, and this time around, we have the fruits of the early work done in checking the spelling under Google Search. Not only do suggestions from Google end up smarter in the long run thanks to the words that Googlebot ‘sees’ as it explores the web, this kind of adaptive technology is set to be implemented in other places as well. Today, Google has rolled out an update to spell checking in documents and presentations which will grow as well as learn with the web, so it can kiss goodbye to a fixed dictionary. Just what are some of the advantages over a traditional spell checker? Well, all suggestions end up as contextual this time around, so much so that the spell checker is now smart enough to know just what you are trying to type when you key in “Icland is an icland.” For example, if you write “Let’s meat tomorrow morning for coffee” you’ll see a suggestion to change “meat” to “meet.” Currently, the new spell checker applies for English documents and presentations only, but as usual, Google is hard at work in introducing support for other languages in due time.
