Kids of the future might be able to role-play the Superman character to an even greater degree of realism assuming the technology involved in turning your smartphone into a portable x-ray vision device is implemented. Research surrounding the terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum might transform the way we use cameras that were built into our smartphones, as scientists are working to integrate terahertz receivers with the CMOS chips which are prevalent in majority of the consumer electronics out there, including smartphones and tablets.

Dr. Kenneth O of the University of Texas Dallas said, “The terahertz range is full of unlimited potential that could benefit us all.” You don’t say, Sherlock? Imagine your doctor performing a quick x-ray on you right there and then in the comfort of his private office without the need to take a number and wait for your turn at the radiology department. Contractors will also find this technology handy, as their smartphones (preferably rugged ones, of course) can view the inside of walls without having to pick up the drill at all. The range will be limited to approximately 4″, so do not worry about someone “undressing” you with their smartphone.
